How to Keep Kitchen Counters Clear (For Good)
Struggling with cluttered kitchen counters? These 5 practical strategies will help you keep your kitchen clean and organised for good. Sydney cleaning tips.
If you have scrubbed the shower recess spotless only to watch the black speckle return within a fortnight, you are living a very Sydney experience. Our humidity hands bathroom mould everything it needs, and most of the standard advice only treats the part you can see.
We are Alex and Justin from AJPresentations, and bathroom grout is some of the most satisfying work we do. Here is why Sydney bathrooms grow mould so reliably, the habits that genuinely prevent it, and an honest guide to the point where cleaning stops being enough.
Mould needs three things: moisture, still air and something to feed on. A Sydney bathroom supplies all three without trying. Coastal humidity regularly sits above 60 percent, so even a dry bathroom starts the day closer to mould's comfort zone than it would in a drier city.
Add showers and the room routinely reaches full saturation. Internal bathrooms without windows fare worst, because the steam has nowhere to go once the fan stops. Soap scum on tiles and screens then acts as a food layer, and the colony quietly establishes itself in the grout lines, the silicone joins and the corners the towel never reaches.
Prevention is about moisture management, and five small habits do most of the job.
The steam is still in the room when you step out. Run the exhaust fan for 15 to 20 minutes after every shower, because that is when it does most of its work. A cheap timer switch makes the habit automatic.
Thirty seconds with a squeegee removes most of the surface moisture in the shower recess, which is exactly the water that would otherwise spend all night feeding growth.
Cross-ventilation clears leftover humidity faster than any fan. Even ten minutes with the window open changes the room's moisture curve for the day.
A dripping tap or a slow leak under the vanity maintains a permanent damp zone, and mould finds it every time. The repair is always cheaper than the regrouting and repainting that follow.
Soap residue is a food source. A quick weekly wipe of the screen and the lower tiles starves the growth of its easiest meal.
White vinegar kills mould on many household surfaces, which is why it is the standard first recommendation. Apply it, give it time to work, scrub, and then dry the area completely. The drying step matters as much as the product, because a surface left damp is an invitation to start over.
Bleach behaves differently from what most people expect. On non-porous surfaces it kills growth, but on porous grout it often only strips the colour from the surface stain while the roots survive underneath. That is why bleached grout so often darkens again within weeks, looking cured while remaining colonised. Whatever you use, dry the area fully afterwards, and never mix bleach with other cleaning products.
Grout that re-darkens within weeks of a proper clean is telling you the growth is below the surface, established in the porous body of the grout where surface products cannot reach. From that point, more scrubbing achieves a little less each time.
This is where a proper clean and a repair part ways. In a KB Reset every grout line is steam cleaned, floor and wall, and surface mould is treated and removed, which is a big part of why our before-and-after bathroom photos look the way they do. If the mould has gone into the grout, silicone or wall lining, that is repair work, and we will tell you on the walkthrough.
We will also tell you honestly when a problem is beyond cleaning. Large areas of growth, mould inside walls or ceilings, or mould that returns despite good ventilation can point to a structural moisture problem, and that calls for a remediation specialist rather than a cleaner. If that is what we see in your bathroom, we will say so plainly.
If you rent, mould is more than a cleaning question. Document what you find with dated photos and report it to your agent or landlord in writing. Ventilation defects, a bathroom without a working exhaust fan, leaks and rising damp are building issues, and in NSW they are the landlord's responsibility to put right.
The written record also protects you at the end of the tenancy, because it separates mould caused by a building problem from mould attributed to how you kept the home. Five minutes of photos and an email now can save a bond dispute later.
Vinegar kills mould on many household surfaces. Bleach mostly removes the stain colour on porous grout while the growth below survives, which is why it returns. Whatever you use, dry the area completely afterwards.
Almost always ventilation. If steam sits in the room after showers, mould has everything it needs. Run the exhaust fan 15 to 20 minutes after each shower and squeegee the glass. If grout re-darkens within weeks, the growth is below the surface and needs deeper work.
We remove surface mould: it is on every KB Reset bathroom list, and every grout line is steam cleaned. Mould that has gone into the grout, silicone, walls or ceilings needs a repair or a remediation specialist, and we will tell you if that is what we see.
